Brief Introduction of
CIP System
Cleaning in Place or CIP systems are widely used in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology industry & food industries to clean and decontaminate tanks, reactors, decanting pumps, and transfer lines etc. The process of manufacturing and handling various biological solutions and mixtures necessitates cleaning and sterilizing these equipment’s from time to time as they are susceptible to contamination. Proper CIP integration with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food equipment is very important for the overall success of the operation. This equipment’s reduce the requirement for labour and minimise the cleaning time. CIP system ensures improved hygiene and sanities more effectively than manual cleaning.
Know More Your CIP System
Our CIP Systems are designed for purification and sterilization of interior surfaces of vessels, equipment, filters, pipes and fittings, without disassembling them. The modular design of these systems and the use of approved standard components of qualified suppliers guarantee efficient and innovative project handling within a short time. The system design guarantees simple self-purification. CIP Systems can also be carried out as interior Sterilization (SIP). Use of special dosage and heating/cooling systems provides a constant and consistent high purification quality. All valid pharmaceutical and technical rules and standards are followed and applied.
Some of the major equipment of this machine includes:
CIP cleaning liquid storage tanks (Include acid tank, alkali tank, and hot water tank). This is where all the liquid for the cleaning are stored to ensure a smooth running process

FAQ
Clean-In-Place (CIP) System are automated systems used to clean the interior surfaces of food and beverages process pipes, processing vessels, tanks, spiral freezers, mixers, blenders, homogenizers, roasters and associated fittings, without disassembling the process. Thorough repeatable in-place cleaning is critical to the quality of your product, the safety of customers and your bottom line. CIP Systems are engineered to your specific plant application, layout and utility requirements for effective and efficient sanitary process equipment cleaning. Application-specific CIP design and sizing ensures sufficient flow. As a result, appropriate pressure is available to thoroughly remove residue, rinse effectively, shorten cycle times and promote worker safety.
- Minimizes mistakes: Automating cleaning reduces the chance of human error that can contribute to an unsafe product.
- Keeps employees safe: Reduces chemical exposure by containing cleaning solutions within the system.
- More production time: As less production time is lost to cleaning, more time is spent making product.
- Product quality: Reliable and repeatable cleaning means sustainable product quality and consistency. Less contamination means fewer product recalls and higher brand confidence.
- Utility savings: Water and energy usage is reduced through repeatable cycle control.
CIP System is commonly used for cleaning bioreactors, fermenters, mix vessels, and other equipment used in biotech manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and food and beverages manufacturing. CIP is performed to remove or obliterate previous mammalian cell culture batch components.

A single-tank (single-use) Clean-In-Place System uses the pre-rinse cycle water, detergent wash, post rinse cycle water, and sanitize solution once and then sends each to the drain. Based on operating costs (costs of CIP chemicals, water, water disposal, steam, and time) a single-tank system costs the most to use and operate. A single-tank CIP System may be appropriate if it is used infrequently.
A 2-tank (detergent re-use) system recaptures the detergent wash solution at the end of each wash step. After making up the loss of water and detergent from the previous wash, it is reused for the next wash step. This often saves 85 to 90 per cent of the water and detergent, and much of the steam (in form of hot wash solution) in an efficiently operating CIP System compared to 1-tank system.
A 3-tank (detergent and rinse re-use) system, pictured to the right, recaptures the detergent wash solution at the end of each wash step and the post rinse solution at the end of each post rinse step. The post rinse solution is used for the next pre-rinse step. This typically saves 100 percent of the fresh water that would have been used in this step compared to a single-tank or 2-tank CIP System. It also has the added benefits of typically being warmer and having some detergent carryover, which aid in pre-rinsing. As with the 2-tank CIP System, there are significant savings in water, detergent and steam in a 3-tank CIP System compared to a single-tank system.
No. Each facility’s process is different, as are the utilities available. To provide a sanitary cleaning solution, the CIP System requires customization.
For sterilization, hot water, steam or chemicals are used. Saturated steams with temperatures up to 1400C are strengthened by the use of disinfection agents (mostly acid, approximately 0.2%). After this step, the plant is left, for the night, weekend, or just to give temperature and acid the chance to work.
Absolutely, you can choose to have the programming done for you by the system manufacturer’s in-house engineers or, if your plant has programming capabilities, you can program the controls used in the CIP System yourself. Generally speaking, CIP System skids can be customized with the specific programming controls for your plant uses.
CIP System sizing depends on your answers to the following questions:
- What will you clean in the CIP washer? Parts, pipes or hoses?
- How big are the biggest parts that need to be cleaned? How long is the longest pipe and/or hose?
- How fragile are the parts?
- How many parts, pipes, and hoses will you need to wash in a given period of time?
If RO (water purified using reverse osmosis), DI (deionized water) or WFI (water for injection) is selected as the cleaning water, there may be an increase in the number of filtration systems or stills required to create the volume needed to accomplish single pass cleaning. If the CIP System is not identified until detail design or later, the facility equipment set is often insufficient to generate the solutions required to accomplish cleaning. If not considered during conceptual design, the floor plan or budget may not allow for the expansion to achieve effective cleaning operations. Similarly, single rinse duration of 5 minutes versus 10 minutes may seem insignificant during the design phase, but when applied 3-4 minutes per circuit, 10-20 times a day; it may result in a grossly undersized water supply and waste handling system.
The CIP unit should be located in close proximity to water and chemical supply, as well as waste discharge destinations to minimize the installation and operating costs. The CIP unit should be located on the lowest floor of the process, centrally located under the process equipment drain ability and CIP return floe while reducing drain times. When properly executed, this approach to installation can eliminate CIP return pumps, along with their pump casing drain valves and drain piping which in turn reduces installation and automation costs.
